LAWAS – A total of 300 reef balls have been deployed in six clusters in Lawas waters under Phase 2 of the Sarawak Reef Ball Project, providing a sustainable fish aggregation zone and enhancing recreational fishing opportunities.

This initiative, launched by Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC), forms part of the state’s Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, which prioritises environmental protection and sustainable blue economy growth.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, who officiated the launch at Kampung Awat-Awat, said the deployment aimed to protect marine ecosystems, replenish fish stocks, and stimulate eco-tourism in Lawas.

“Phase 1 of the project began in 2018, and we’ve already seen promising results in marine conservation, habitat protection, and fish population recovery,” he shared.

The Bukit Sari assemblyman noted that six Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs) were established from Bukit Sari to Punang in 2019. As of today, 12 sport fishing zones have been recognised within Lawas waters, attracting both locals and tourists.

This environmentally driven effort also aligns with Sarawak’s long-term goals for sustainable development and biodiversity protection.
