Uggah Leads 256km Baram Infra Expedition Amid Bridge Repairs

BARAM — Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas concluded the first leg of a 256 kilometre infrastructure expedition through Baram’s remote interior on Tuesday, personally assessing critical transport links used by isolated communities.

The Minister for Infrastructure and Port Development led a Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR) delegation, overnighting at Segah Selaan Homestay to underscore the state’s hands-on approach to rural development.

The mission evaluated active and decommissioned logging roads serving as vital community lifelines. Uggah confirmed plans to introduce a new rural road maintenance strategy by year-end, prioritizing safety and usability.

Immediate infrastructure interventions include rebuilding the collapsed Sungai Sengayan Bridge and repairing Long San Bridge, with 27 additional Baram bridges slated for maintenance.

Earlier, Uggah convened village chiefs and community leaders (KMKK) to document local infrastructure needs. He commended JKR officers for enduring challenging terrain to conduct comprehensive assessments. The delegation—including Deputy Minister Datuk Gerawat Gala, Baram MP Dato Anyi Ngau, Telang Usan Assemblyman Dato Dennis Ngau, Miri Division Resident Galong Luang, and JKR Sarawak Director Dr. Cassidy Morris—proceeds to Bario today for road inspections and resident dialogues.
