BETONG – A total of 59 fishermen from the Beladin area in Betong received the keys to their new homes today under the Fishermen Relocation Project (PSN) Beladin, marking a significant milestone in Sarawak’s ongoing efforts to uplift rural communities.
The key handover ceremony was officiated by the Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg. He also personally visited one of the new homes to assess the quality and outcome of the project.
“This project clearly reflects the government’s unwavering commitment to ensuring that rural fishing communities like Beladin are not left behind in the development process,” said the Premier in his address.
PSN Beladin is a collaborative effort involving the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (KPKM), the Government of Sarawak, the Malaysian Fisheries Development Authority (LKIM), and the Sarawak State Economic Planning Unit (UPENS). The project carries a total allocation of RM21.25 million, with the first phase involving the construction of 68 housing units valued at RM6.8 million.
Of these, 59 recipients received their house keys and signed ownership agreements today. The initiative aims to provide safer, more comfortable housing to fishing families who previously lived in areas prone to floods and severe weather.
The Premier noted that the new homes not only improve living conditions but also help provide younger generations in these communities with a more structured and progressive environment.
Following the handover event, the Premier also visited the site of the Beladin Cliff Project in Pusa. Valued at RM45 million, the project is set to become a new landmark for the area. It is envisioned to serve as a community hub and economic catalyst, particularly in tourism, small businesses, and leisure.
The Fishermen Relocation Project is part of Sarawak’s larger vision to foster inclusive development across rural areas, ensuring that no community is left behind.
