Sarawak Balances Infrastructure Growth with Orangutan Protection

KUCHING – Sarawak’s approach to major infrastructure projects now rigorously incorporates environmental conservation principles, with a specific focus on protecting critical orangutan habitats.

This policy was highlighted by Datuk Len Talif Salleh, Deputy Minister of Urban Planning, Land Administration and Environment, during a recent ceremony in Kuching.

A prime example of this sustainable model is the design of the Second Trunk Highway. To avoid disrupting a vital ecosystem, a section traversing the Ulu Sibu Hitam National Park will be constructed as an elevated highway.

This engineering solution safeguards the forest floor and allows the park to retain its designation as a Totally Protected Area (TPA).

Datuk Len noted that Sarawak is currently home to four TPAs specifically recognized as orangutan sanctuaries: Batang Ai National Park, Ulu Sibu Hitam National Park, Setiru National Park, and the Ranga Endimau Wildlife Sanctuary.

This development strategy aligns with the state’s broader Post-Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030, which seeks a careful equilibrium between advancing economic progress, ensuring social inclusivity, and maintaining ecological sustainability.

The government’s aim is to ensure that development does not come at the expense of the state’s unique biodiversity.
