KAPIT – The Kapit District Council (MDK) has been called upon to reinforce its commitment to transparency, accountability, and timely execution of development initiatives to better serve rural communities.
Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department (Native Law & Customs), Datuk Jefferson Jamit Unyat, made the appeal during his address at the opening of the council’s third-quarter Full Council Meeting on Friday.
He stressed that councillors must actively listen to public concerns, collaborate closely with civil servants, and ensure all Rural Transformation Programme (RTP) projects adhere strictly to approved standards and schedules.
“While MDK’s efforts have been commendable, consistency is key,” he said. “The people of Bukit Goram and surrounding areas rely on these developments for improved living conditions delays or substandard work directly impact their livelihoods.”
The meeting, held at the council’s Level 3 chamber, also underscored the need for financial sustainability. Officials encouraged MDK to broaden its revenue base through enhanced fee collection and the promotion of small-scale local enterprises, reducing dependence on central government funding and enabling more responsive community programs.
Prior to the session, Datuk Jefferson joined council members and staff for a group photograph and received an overview of the agenda and pressing local issues from Chairman Ir. Andy Lawrence. He was later presented with a token of appreciation.
Also in attendance were Deputy Chairman Cr. Martin Bilun, Acting Secretary Opang Melay, fellow councillors, and heads of relevant district departments.
