KUCHING – Sarawak has reinforced its commitment to eliminating rabies by 2030, aligning with global targets set by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and international animal health bodies.
Datuk Amar Dr. Sim Kui Hian, Deputy Premier and Minister of Public Health, Housing, and Local Government, emphasized that achieving this goal requires a unified effort from all sectors of society, not solely government agencies.
Speaking at the World Rabies Day 2025 event hosted at the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Community Hall, Dr. Sim highlighted the stakes involved, noting that failure to eradicate the disease could tarnish the state’s reputation.
He urged communities, pet owners, non-governmental organisations, local authorities, and the Sarawak Veterinary Services Department (DVSS) to actively participate in vaccination drives and public education initiatives.
The government offers free medical treatment for animal bites or scratches, significantly reducing mortality risks. Ongoing programs include Anti-Rabies Vaccination, Dog Licensing, Microchipping, and Subsidized Neutering, complemented by awareness talks and health check-ups.
The recent Rabies Awareness Fun Run, sponsored by Boehringer Ingelheim, drew substantial public engagement, while the Rabies in Borneo 2025 International Conference at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) will further strategize regional cooperation.
Dr. Sim acknowledged international partners and community support as pivotal to the campaign’s success, reiterating that vigilance and immediate treatment-seeking behaviour are critical to safeguarding public health.
