Kuching Marathon 2025 Attracts 14,000 Runners from 37 Nations

KUCHING – The Kuching Marathon 2025 (KM2025) once again made history today when more than 14,150 runners from 37 countries gathered at Padang Merdeka to take part in the city’s most anticipated annual sporting event.

Datuk Bandar Dewan Bandaraya Kuching Utara (DBKU), Dato Hilmy Othman, said the marathon has now grown into one of the most awaited sporting events not only in Sarawak but across Malaysia and the region.

“This marathon is more than just a race. It is a journey that showcases the beauty of Kuching City, its heritage, culture, natural environment, and most importantly, the warmth of our people,” he said during the prize-giving ceremony at Padang Merdeka.

Dato Hilmy also highlighted that Kuching’s recognition as a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy makes the event even more special, inviting all participants to explore Sarawak’s unique culinary delights after the run.

This year’s edition welcomed participants from Peninsular Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Kenya, Denmark, France, Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States.

As in past years, Kenyan athletes dominated the main event. David Rono won the Men’s Full Marathon with a time of 2 hours, 26 minutes, and 21 seconds, while Abigael Jerop clinched the Women’s Full Marathon title with a time of 3 hours, 15 minutes, and 19 seconds.

A total of RM125,000 in prize money was offered across four categories – Full Marathon (42km), Half Marathon (21km), 10km, and 5km.

The prizes were presented by Dato Hilmy, who represented the Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development, Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah. He also expressed gratitude to the participants, organisers, sponsors, volunteers, and agencies that made the 10th edition of the prestigious marathon possible.

Recognised by the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS), the Kuching Marathon continues to be regarded as one of the most prestigious long-distance races in the region.

Dato Hilmy added that DBKU, together with the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, will continue to fully support the international event.

“Our hope is that the Kuching Marathon will grow bigger and better in the years to come. With the spirit of unity, this event will continue to be a source of pride for all of us,” he said.
