Policeman Killed in Crash with Two Trailers on Gerik Road

GERIK – A policeman was killed in a tragic accident involving his car and two trailers at Kilometer 85.3 Jalan Kuala Kangsar, Gerik–Pengkalan Hulu near Kampung Tawai early Wednesday morning.

The victim, Detective Sergeant Mohd Fahmi Arzmi, 42, who served in the Criminal Investigation Division at the Gerik District Police Headquarters (IPD), was confirmed dead at the scene due to severe injuries.

Gerik District Police Chief, Superintendent Abdul Samad Othman, said the police received a report of the incident at about 1.50am.

According to him, the Toyota Vios driven by the victim was travelling from Gerik towards Kuala Kangsar when the accident occurred.

“At the time of the crash, the victim’s car was following behind a trailer transporting logs. A fertiliser-laden trailer, coming from the opposite direction, is believed to have skidded and struck the right side of the log trailer.

“The impact caused both heavy vehicles to collide, before the fertiliser trailer crossed into the opposite lane and rammed into the victim’s car,” he said in a statement.

The 23-year-old driver of the fertiliser trailer sustained a head injury and was taken to Taiping Hospital for treatment. Meanwhile, the 59-year-old driver of the log trailer escaped unhurt.

Superintendent Abdul Samad said the victim’s body was taken to the Gerik Hospital Forensic Unit for a post-mortem.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.

Police have urged members of the public who witnessed the accident or have further information to contact Inspector Nik Zailan Nik Li at 019-9004785 to assist in the investigation.

This incident once again highlights the dangers of late-night heavy vehicle operations on winding stretches of Gerik roads, often linked to serious accidents in the area.
