KUCHING – Sarawak’s leading role in shaping an Islamic economic agenda fit for the modern era was a central theme at a major international forum held in the city this week.
The 14th World Zakat and Charitable Trusts Forum (WZWF) Annual Conference, convened at the Sarawak Smart Trade Centre, placed a strong emphasis on adapting to global economic shifts and technological progress.
The state’s Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr. Abang Johari Openg, stated that Sarawak’s selection as the event’s host signifies recognition of its progressive approach to Muslim economic development.
He expressed gratitude to the federal government and organising bodies for the opportunity to showcase the state’s initiatives.
In a press interview following the opening ceremony, the Premier urged the Muslim community to prepare for the future by engaging with strategic, high-growth sectors.
He specifically highlighted the critical importance of fields like semiconductors and artificial intelligence (AI).
Abang Johari asserted that active involvement in the research and development of such technologies would yield significant benefits for Muslims and contribute to broader human welfare.
He also championed the concept of ‘knowledge donation’, which frames the contribution of expertise as a valuable, lasting asset for community advancement.
To further these goals, the Premier confirmed that Sarawak would continue its close collaboration with the WZWF Secretariat.
This partnership will focus on investigating and tailoring new economic concepts and methodologies to suit local requirements and maximise their benefit.
