KUCHING — The much-awaited Sarawak Open International Dragon and Lion Dance Cup 2025 kicked off with a vibrant Opening Ceremony at the Ang Cheng Ho Quarry Multi-Purpose Hall in Batu Kawa, marking a spectacular start to one of Malaysia’s most prestigious cultural competitions.
The event drew massive local and international attention, showcasing the beauty, rhythm, and acrobatic precision of dragon and lion dance performances from across Asia. It also highlighted Sarawak’s growing reputation as a world-class host for international cultural events, solidifying its position on the global stage.
During the ceremony, Deputy Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Amar Dr. Sim Kui Hian, announced ambitious plans to transform Batu Kawa into a modern lifestyle and tourism hub by 2030. The development blueprint includes a water theme park, shopping complex, and new family-friendly attractions that aim to boost local tourism and create more opportunities for the community.
Among the distinguished guests present were Padawan Municipal Council Chairman Tan Kai, Federation Secretary-General Datuk Yong Kheng Chien, Organising Chairman and CMAA President Chester Lim, and Competition Chairman and CMAA Advisor Pemanca Tan Kun Gee.
The event’s Prize Presentation Ceremony was officiated by Dato Tan Guek Kee, Chairman of Lee Onn Group, and Datin Lee Siew Ling, who presented awards to top-performing teams.
In the High Pole Southern Lion Dance category, the Gong He Dragon & Lion Dance Club (China) took the Champion title with an impressive score of 9.45, followed by Kelab Tarian Naga Dan Singa Tung Fa Kuching (9.32) and Tiger Warrior Dragon & Lion Dance Indonesia (9.27).
Meanwhile, in the Luminous Dragon Dance category, the Yaya Awal Ang Shiang Tai Tee Temple Dragon Dance Troupe (Malaysia) claimed first place with a score of 9.37, followed by Persatuan Kesenian Long Yi Negeri Sembilan (9.14) and Kang Yuan Sports Association Dragon & Lion Dance Troupe, Johor (9.02).
The night ended with roaring applause, colourful lights, and a sense of pride that Sarawak continues to be a beacon for preserving and promoting cultural heritage in Malaysia and beyond.
