KOTA TINGGI – A tragic accident at Kilometer 26, Jalan Lok Heng–Mawai, claimed the life of a 38-year-old lorry driver after his vehicle plunged into a ravine and burst into flames on Thursday afternoon.
Kota Tinggi District Police Chief, Superintendent Yusof Othman, said his team received the emergency report at 4.35pm involving a Volvo lorry that was completely destroyed in the fire.
According to early findings, the vehicle is believed to have skidded on its own before veering off the road and falling into the ravine. The impact and resulting blaze left the driver trapped inside, causing severe burns across his entire body.
Superintendent Yusof confirmed that the victim died at the scene. The body was later sent to the Forensic Unit of Kota Tinggi Hospital for further examination and identification procedures.
He added that no other vehicles were involved in the incident, and there were no signs of foul play at this stage of the investigation.
The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which carries a prison sentence of five to 10 years and a fine ranging from RM20,000 to RM50,000 upon conviction. Offenders may also face a minimum five-year driving licence suspension.
Superintendent Yusof reminded all motorists to be extra careful, particularly when travelling in winding or hilly areas known for sudden skidding risks. He stressed the importance of safe driving, especially during uncertain weather conditions or on less-maintained rural roads.
He also urged road users to always stay alert, follow traffic rules, and ensure their vehicles are in good condition before starting any journey. A small precaution, he said, can save lives and prevent families from suffering unexpected loss.
This tragic case once again highlights the need for stronger road safety awareness and responsible driving habits among Malaysians, especially those operating heavy vehicles on challenging routes.
