SIBU – The Sibu Municipal Council (MPS) has been commended for its progress in realising its vision “Towards a Livable and Sustainable City by 2031”, with achievements in smart city initiatives and community-focused programmes already benefiting residents.
Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Professor Dr Sim Kui Hian said MPS has demonstrated its capabilities as a progressive and competitive local authority, aligning with the state’s aspirations for modern and sustainable urban development.
“With the commitment shown by the leadership, management and all MPS employees, as well as the support of strategic partners, Sibu is on the right track to emerge as a modern, sustainable and forward-looking city,” he said.
His speech was delivered by Bukit Assek State Assemblyman Joseph Chieng Jin Ek during the MPS 2025 Appreciation Night at Kingwood Hotel on Friday.
The Deputy Premier, who also serves as Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government, outlined MPS’s priorities in strengthening public health, environmental sustainability and community development.
He noted that the council is focused on improving municipal service delivery, advancing digital transformation and implementing smart city initiatives.
“Sibu is a diverse and harmonious city. Its strength lies in its unity, culture and people. When we work together at all levels, we build a cleaner, safer, greener and more dynamic Sibu,” he said.
Dr Sim acknowledged that local government responsibilities are often complex and demanding, requiring high levels of commitment.
He stressed that MPS plays a crucial role in ensuring the city functions smoothly, covering areas such as public health, cleanliness, infrastructure services, community programmes, enforcement and smart city projects.
“Most of these efforts are carried out continuously and often unnoticed. Therefore, tonight’s ceremony is held to appreciate the dedication, professionalism and service of MPS staff to the people of Sibu,” he added.
The Appreciation Night served as a recognition of the council’s ongoing contributions and the collective effort of its workforce in shaping Sibu’s future.
With its focus on sustainability, innovation and inclusivity, MPS is positioning the city to meet the challenges of urban growth while enhancing the quality of life for its residents.
