DARO – A major infrastructure project worth RM65 million has been confirmed for Kampung Sawai, with construction of a new road expected to commence in 2026.
The development is anticipated to significantly enhance connectivity for rural communities in the area.
The announcement was made by Daro State Assemblyman Dr Safiee Ahmad, who described the initiative as a high-impact project designed to improve accessibility and stimulate socio-economic growth.
He emphasised that better road links would ease daily travel, support local businesses, and create new opportunities for residents.
“This road is very important to facilitate the movement of residents, facilitate daily affairs and open up more economic opportunities for the community of Kampung Sawai and the surrounding areas,” Dr Safiee said during a recent event.
The statement was delivered at the 2025 Christmas Celebration Ceremony held at St Cosmas Chapel, Kampung Sawai, Matu.
The occasion also included the presentation of financial assistance from the Unit for Other Religious Affairs (UNIFOR).
As part of the ceremony, Dr Safiee handed over a cheque worth RM350,000 from UNIFOR to support the upkeep and improvement of facilities at St Cosmas Chapel.
He noted that the aid reflects the Sarawak Government’s commitment to maintaining religious harmony and ensuring the welfare of diverse communities.
In addition to the road project and chapel funding, Dr Safiee announced RM450,000 for the upgrading of the Sawai Village Hall.
The hall is expected to serve as a hub for social, cultural, and community activities, providing residents with a modernised space for gatherings and events.
The combined allocations highlight the government’s broader strategy of investing in rural infrastructure and community facilities.
Improved transport links, alongside enhanced social spaces, are seen as essential to raising living standards and supporting long-term development in Sarawak’s rural districts.
Local leaders have welcomed the initiatives, noting that better infrastructure will not only improve mobility but also encourage investment and tourism in the region.
The projects are expected to create jobs during construction and provide lasting benefits once completed.
The Kampung Sawai road project forms part of Sarawak’s wider rural development agenda, which has prioritised bridging the gap between urban and rural communities.
With construction scheduled to begin in 2026, residents are hopeful that the new road will mark a turning point in accessibility and economic growth for the area.
