Miri Police Crack Down on Street Thugs in New Year 2026 Operation

Miri Police Crack Down on Street Thugs in New Year 2026 Operation

KUCHING – The Miri District Police successfully carried out a major operation targeting street thugs and reckless motorcycle riders during the New Year 2026 celebrations. The operation, aimed at ensuring road safety and curbing dangerous riding practices, saw active participation from both the police and the Miri Road Transport Department.

Led by ASP Thien Woon Cheng, the Integrated Operation, known locally as the “Street Thug Operation BSPTD Miri,” began at 11.00 pm on December 31, 2025. Officers from the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division, along with eight lower-ranking personnel, patrolled key areas in Miri, including Jalan Piasau, Jalan Pulau Melayu, Jalan Miri By-Pass, and Jalan Marina. These locations were chosen due to frequent reports of teenagers performing risky stunts, including speeding and wheelies, often riding alone.

During the five-hour operation, police issued a total of 40 summonses for various traffic offences and detained 25 motorcycles for further inspection at the BSPTD IPD Miri Office. Among these, 12 motorcycles were seized under Section 64 of the Road Transport Act 1987, highlighting the serious approach taken against illegal modifications and dangerous riding behaviours.

The operation concluded smoothly at 5.00 am on January 1, 2026, marking the start of the New Year with a strong message on road safety. Police officers used the opportunity to advise parents to closely monitor their teenage children to prevent them from joining street gangs or riding motorcycles without a valid license. Authorities stressed the importance of responsible riding and community involvement to curb illegal street activities.

Miri police emphasized that operations like this are part of ongoing efforts to protect the public and ensure the safety of all road users, especially during festive periods when risky driving tends to increase. The joint initiative between the police and the Road Transport Department serves as a reminder that illegal street racing and reckless riding will not be tolerated.
