McLeod Technique Workshop Brings Global Dance Exchange to Kuching
KUCHING: Kuching’s dance community witnessed a meaningful cultural milestone with the successful staging of the McLeod Technique Workshop, an internationally recognised contemporary dance programme led by Delphics USA President Sean McLeod and his delegation from the United States. The three-hour workshop, held on January 4, 2026, marked an important step in strengthening global cultural exchange while nurturing local dance talents in Sarawak.
The workshop took place from 2pm to 5pm at the Auditorium of the Sarawak United People’s Party headquarters along Jalan Tan Sri Ong Kee Hui. Jointly organised by Delphic Malaysia and the Kuching Unity Dance Association, the event received strong support from SUPP Kuching, reflecting continued collaboration between arts groups and community stakeholders in promoting cultural development.
A total of 90 participants from government and private schools, private dance academies, and various dance bodies took part in the session. Participants were guided through the fundamentals of the McLeod Technique, a codified, emotion-based contemporary dance approach that bridges classical ballet, modern dance and urban styles. The method integrates influences from Limón, Graham and Horton techniques, as well as martial arts, African dance, Latin rhythms and social urban movements, while emphasising emotional awareness and mental wellbeing.
The programme officially opened at 2pm with an opening speech by Gerald Goh, who introduced the Delphics movement and expressed appreciation to SUPP for providing the venue. This was followed by remarks from Delphic Malaysia president Madam Vicky Fong warmly welcomed Sean McLeod and his delegation, which included Delphian Devon McLeod and Kierstyn Zaykoski, Director of Delphics New York and National Director of the New York Institute of Dance and Education. She described the workshop as a special gesture for the people of Kuching and an important part of ongoing global cultural collaboration.
The event was further honoured by the presence of Madam Kho Teck Wan, representatives from the Majlis Seni Sarawak, members of the media, and instructors from various local dance groups. Their attendance underscored the importance of collective support in advancing the arts at both grassroots and institutional levels.
Kuching Unity Dance Association President Chan Lay Na also addressed the gathering, And expressed appreciation to the KUDA committee, whose teamwork and dedication enabled the workshop to be successfully delivered within less than a week of preparation. Irene Lim from Delphic Malaysia was acknowledged for her efforts in setting up and coordinating the event. Participants were thanked for their enthusiasm and commitment, with hopes that the knowledge gained would contribute to their artistic growth.
The workshop forms part of early preparations towards the 8th International Delphics Games, scheduled to be held in Kuching in 2027. With events like this, Kuching continues to position itself as a growing hub for cultural exchange, creative learning and international artistic collaboration.
