Sarawak, 8 January 2026 – The Sarawak Consumers’ Association (PPS) has issued a warning following reports of online vehicle buying and selling fraud involving the misuse of company identities. Ben Lee Automobile Sdn. Bhd. lodged an official complaint after discovering that individuals were illegally using the company’s name, logo, and vehicle images to deceive buyers on an online platform.
According to PPS, several victims have suffered financial losses through these scams. The reported amounts include RM3,900 and RM6,300 from two separate victims, along with other transactions of varying sums. All payments were transferred to the personal bank accounts of the perpetrators, rather than the official company account, resulting in significant losses for the buyers.
PPS President Dr. Wynson explained that scammers often begin by requesting small payments, such as deposits or early booking fees, to gain the consumer’s trust. Once trust is established, they demand larger payments, leading to serious financial damage. He urged the public to conduct all vehicle transactions through legitimate, face-to-face dealings or verified company channels. Dr. Wynson also emphasised verifying the recipient’s account to ensure it is registered under a legitimate company, not a personal account.
The PPS statement highlighted that fraud and scams remain one of the most concerning consumer issues today, particularly with online transactions. Dr. Wynson reminded that consumers have the right to obtain true and accurate information, one of the eight fundamental consumer rights, and encouraged buyers to research sellers, check company credentials, and make preliminary verifications before making any payments.
PPS further noted that complaints related to online buying and selling fraud are common, stressing the importance of consumer awareness and smart spending to reduce risks. Members of the public who wish to lodge complaints or seek advice on consumer matters can contact PPS via their official line at 017-710 9299.
