KUCHING — The Road Transport Department (JPJ) Kuching has stepped up enforcement efforts through a Special Ops targeting motorcycles and the illegal use of HID lights, as part of ongoing measures to improve road safety in the city. The operation was carried out on Friday along Jalan Datuk Patinggi Haji Abdul Rahman, one of Kuching’s busy urban routes, and involved roadblocks and inspections on vehicles of various types.
The special operation was aimed at reminding road users of their responsibility to comply with traffic laws and vehicle regulations, not only for their own safety but also for the safety of other road users. JPJ officers were deployed on site to conduct document checks, vehicle inspections and enforcement actions against those found violating existing rules.
During the operation, a total of 724 vehicles were inspected. From this number, JPJ detected several types of offences, with the use of illegal HID lights among the most common. These lights, often modified without approval, can cause glare and reduce visibility for other drivers, increasing the risk of accidents. Other offences recorded included driving without a valid licence, expired road tax, and technical violations related to vehicle condition.
As a result of the enforcement action, JPJ issued a total of 260 non-compliance notices to offending road users. In addition, six motorcycles were seized after inspections revealed that they were operating with expired road tax and without valid insurance coverage. Such offences are considered serious, as uninsured and unregistered vehicles pose significant risks on public roads.
JPJ Sarawak, in a statement following the operation, reminded all road users to consistently ensure that their driving licences, road tax and insurance coverage remain valid. Motorists were also advised to make sure their vehicles are in safe condition and comply with technical requirements set under existing transport laws.
According to JPJ, enforcement alone is not enough to maintain road safety. The department stressed that cooperation and responsible behaviour from all road users are essential in creating a safe, orderly and disciplined road environment. Regular operations such as this Special Ops will continue to be conducted to educate the public, deter violations and reduce road accidents.
The Special Ops in Kuching reflects JPJ’s continued commitment to upholding road safety standards and ensuring that traffic laws are respected across Sarawak, especially in high-traffic urban areas.
