JPJ Sarikei Enforces Road Safety in Special Ops BTS and Ops Gempur

SARIKEI – The Road Transport Department (JPJ) Sarawak, through its Sarikei Operations Unit, implemented Special Ops Back To School (BTS) and Ops Gempur Commercial Vehicles on 19 January 2026 with road safety enforcement operations in Sarikei town and static checks at Kilometre 42, Jalan Sarikei-Sibu.

The operation was intended to reinforce traffic laws in general, including for commercial vehicle drivers, and protect student safety as schools resumed. A total of 164 vehicles, both commercial and private, were checked during the operation.

Authorities said several offences were detected, including drivers without valid licences, unregistered vehicles, expired road tax, and technical breaches. Enforcement actions were taken against offenders under existing laws.

JPJ Sarawak stressed that the effort is part of its continuous enforcement initiatives. Officials emphasised that proactive steps are vital to increase compliance and keep all road users safe.

The Back To School operation was held in conjunction with the start of the academic year to ensure vehicles transporting students comply with safety standards. Ops Gempur, meanwhile, focused on commercial vehicles as they are regulated more stringently due to their impact on road safety and infrastructure.

According to JPJ, enforcement should not only be punitive but also educational for drivers and operators. Through regular checks, the department aims to promote discipline and responsible behaviour on the road.

The community expressed strong support for the initiative, acknowledging that strict enforcement helps reduce risks and ensures safer travel for families and businesses. The department also reiterated its commitment to continued monitoring and firm action against any violations.

The operation is part of JPJ Sarawak’s broader initiative to strengthen road safety awareness throughout the state. Authorities emphasised that consistent enforcement and public education are key to reducing accidents and maintaining order on the roads.
