KAPIT – The Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) Sarawak unit proceeded with its Phase 1 fieldwork for the 2026 Economic Census in Sarawak on January 26, where officers from the Kapit Statistics Office carried out quality review and on-site data collection at selected focus business areas in the town.
The team, which visited several other places including the Seasonal Fruit Dealers’ area situated behind Kapit Post Office and the Kapit Wharf Express Food Stall, directly engaged traders and business operators in order to obtain imperative economic information.
The Economic Census, which takes place every five years, is Malaysia’s most all-encompassing statistical survey of businesses in all types of non-public sectors. It also plays a vital role for the state of Sarawak because, from the census, we will understand how our economic sectors develop so that government can plan ahead for growth, investments and sustainability.
DOSM ensuring that the census reflects the entire spectrum of Sarawak’s economy, from small operators such as fruit vendors and food stalls to larger commercial outfits. That inclusiveness is what allows the state to gauge employment, revenue and market trends that influence its economic picture.
The scrutiny led by DOSM management in Kapit is an indication that the department will go all out to ensure the highest quality of accuracy and timeliness in data collection. Maintaining the high quality of fieldwork is essential for generating statistics that can guide national and state planning.
DOSM Sarawak has called on the public’s cooperation during this census period, reassuring that no information will be disclosed, and it is strictly for statistical purposes. Businesses are also invited to contribute actively as, without their engagement, the whole perspective of economy landscape in Sarawak will not be fully covered.
The fieldwork in Kapit is testament of DOSM’s commitment to reaching out to local population, underscoring the importance of evidence-based policy and planning. These same activities are ongoing across other districts as Phase 1 advances in order to paint a holistic view of Sarawak’s economic pulse for 2026 Economic Census.
