BELAWAI – Search and rescue teams continued operations on 19 February following the reported drowning of a fisherman at Belawai Seaside Beach.
The victim, Sabarudin Bin Awang Kamarudin, aged 48, was said to have drowned on 18 February while fishing along the coastal waters. Witnesses reported that he was seen frantically calling for help before disappearing beneath the surface.
The first day of the operation began at 6.30am, involving multiple agencies, including the Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) Tanjung Manis District, the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), the Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM), RELA, the Sarawak River Board, and several local fishing boats.
More than 50 personnel and dozens of boats were mobilised to search the surrounding waters and coastline. Despite the strong response, heavy rain in the morning hampered visibility and slowed progress.
Authorities confirmed that the search area was expanded to cover both nearshore and offshore zones, with teams coordinating closely to maximise coverage. Local fishermen also joined the effort, lending their boats and knowledge of the area to assist the operation.
Community members have expressed concern over the incident, noting that Belawai Beach is a popular fishing spot but can be dangerous during periods of rough weather. Safety reminders have been issued, urging residents and visitors to exercise caution when engaging in activities near the sea.
As of the latest update, the victim has not yet been found. Officials stated that the operation will continue periodically, with adjustments made according to weather and tidal conditions.
Family members of the missing fisherman remain at the site, awaiting news. Local leaders have voiced support for the family, emphasising the importance of community solidarity during such difficult times.
The incident highlights the risks faced by coastal communities and the vital role of coordinated rescue efforts. Authorities have pledged to sustain the search until all possible avenues are exhausted.
