KUCHING — The Syariah Counselling & Psychological Development Division under the Sarawak Islamic Religious Affairs Department recently organised an online counselling session aimed at addressing mental health and emotional management within marriages and social relationships.
Held on Wednesday, 25 February 2026, via the Zoom platform, the event attracted 100 participants from diverse backgrounds, including civil servants, private sector employees, and members of the public. The session, titled “Mental Health: Emotional Management in Marriage and Social Relationships”, was led by Mrs. Sarah Hamizah binti Zainal Abidin, the founder and principal counsellor of Syoknya Counselling.
The programme sought to raise awareness about the significance of mental health, foster a deeper understanding of emotional challenges in interpersonal relationships, and equip attendees with practical skills for effective emotional management. By focusing on these areas, organisers aimed to promote mutual well-being and stronger social bonds within the community.
In recent years, the Sarawak Islamic Religious Affairs Department has intensified its efforts to provide accessible mental health support, particularly through digital platforms. This initiative aligns with broader trends in public health, where online counselling has become increasingly popular due to its convenience and ability to reach a wider audience.
The choice of topic reflects growing recognition of the impact that emotional health has on marital and social harmony. Experts note that effective communication and emotional regulation are critical in maintaining healthy relationships, especially in today’s fast-paced society.
Participants engaged in interactive discussions and received guidance on managing stress, resolving conflicts, and nurturing positive interactions. The session also highlighted the role of faith-based counselling in addressing mental health concerns, offering a holistic approach that integrates spiritual and psychological well-being.
The Sarawak Islamic Religious Affairs Department has previously organised similar programmes, underscoring its commitment to community welfare and the importance of mental health education. As part of its ongoing mission, the department continues to collaborate with qualified professionals to deliver relevant and impactful initiatives.
The success of this virtual counselling session may pave the way for future events, further expanding access to mental health resources across Sarawak.
