MIRI – Police in Miri have stepped up enforcement against illegal street motorcycle activities after a recent operation led to the seizure of 10 motorcycles and the issuance of 40 summonses.
The operation, known as Op Samseng Jalanan, was conducted by the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division of the Miri District Police Headquarters (IPD Miri). According to Miri District Police Chief, ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah, the operation took place from 4.00 pm on February 7 until 2.00 am on March 8.
The enforcement activity focused on several areas in the district including Jalan Piasau, Jalan Miri Bypass, Jalan Marina and Jalan Tanjong Lobang. These locations were selected following complaints from members of the public about groups of motorcyclists causing disturbance and disrupting the smooth flow of traffic.
ACP Mohd Farhan said the operation aimed to address the issue of “samseng jalanan” or street gang behaviour, which often involves reckless motorcycle riding, dangerous stunts and excessive noise from modified vehicles. Such activities not only create public nuisance but also pose serious risks to other road users.
During the operation, police inspected a total of 22 individuals consisting of 20 men and two women. Officers also checked 15 motorcycles suspected of being involved in the activities.
Investigations found that several traffic offences had been committed. Among the offences detected were riding motorcycles without a valid driving licence, illegal modifications to the motorcycle structure and the installation of modified exhaust systems that produce excessive noise.
Other violations included motorcycles without side mirrors, missing registration numbers and the use of decorative or “fancy” number plates that do not comply with official standards. Some motorcycles were also found to have other technical issues that violated road transport regulations.
As a result of the inspection, police issued 40 summonses to individuals who had breached traffic laws. In addition, 10 motorcycles were confiscated under Section 60 of the Road Transport Act 1987 for further investigation and possible legal action.
ACP Mohd Farhan stressed that the police will continue to take firm action against individuals involved in illegal street racing or gang-related road activities. He warned that such behaviour can endanger not only the riders themselves but also innocent motorists and pedestrians.
He also reminded the public to always follow road regulations, avoid making unauthorised modifications to their vehicles and refrain from activities that disturb public safety and order.

Police believe that cooperation from the community remains important in maintaining road safety and ensuring that public roads are used responsibly by all.
