APM Lubok Antu Safely Removes Python From Local Store

LUBOK ANTU – A routine cleaning task at a local shop turned into an unexpected encounter when a one-metre batik python was discovered inside Acham Store earlier today. The store owner, startled by the reptile’s presence, immediately contacted the Civil Defence Force (APM) in Lubok Antu for assistance.

Responding promptly, the APM team arrived at the scene and successfully secured the python without incident. Their swift action helped ease the concerns of the shopkeeper and ensured the safety of the premises.

Officials later confirmed that the python was non-venomous, but stressed that such animals can still pose risks if handled improperly. The Civil Defence team reminded residents that dangerous or unfamiliar wildlife should never be approached without professional help.

The incident highlights the increasing frequency of python sightings in both rural and urban areas of Sarawak. According to the Forest Department of Sarawak, reticulated pythons, which can grow up to 15 metres in length, are often found near water sources but are also known to enter settlements in search of food. While smaller specimens can be managed safely, larger adults are capable of inflicting serious injury through powerful constriction.

Similar rescues have taken place across Sarawak in recent months. In January, firefighters in Miri captured a 10-foot albino python that had escaped from a private enclosure. The reptile was later handed over to the Sarawak Forestry Corporation for safe management.

The Lubok Antu Civil Defence team expressed gratitude to the public for their vigilance and cooperation. “Thank you to the public who immediately contacted us. Remember, if there is an emergency involving a poisonous or dangerous animal, do not act alone. Contact APM immediately,” the team stated.

Residents are urged to keep emergency numbers accessible. The APM Lubok Antu office can be reached at 083-584639, while urgent cases should be directed to 999.

This latest rescue underscores the importance of community awareness and rapid reporting in ensuring safety when wildlife enters populated areas. Authorities continue to encourage residents to remain cautious and to rely on trained personnel when dealing with potentially hazardous animals.
