In Kuching, hawkers at Kenyalang Food Center welcomed a special visitor during a Chinese New Year gathering when Dato Wee Hong Seng joined them to celebrate the festive season.
The mayor, who leads the Kuching South City Council, spent time with hawkers who serve residents daily at one of the city’s well-known food centres. The gathering recognised their contribution to the local community and Kuching’s food culture.
During the event, Wee thanked the hawkers for their dedication in providing affordable and quality meals. He said their work plays an important role in keeping the city’s food scene lively and accessible to residents.
He also described Kenyalang Food Center as more than a dining spot. According to him, the centre serves as a community space where people meet, interact, and share everyday moments.
The hawkers, he added, help preserve the unique culinary identity and welcoming atmosphere associated with the city.
The mayor also extended Chinese New Year greetings to the vendors, wishing them good health, prosperity, and continued success in the coming year.
Known for its wide range of local dishes, Kenyalang Food Center remains a favourite among both residents and visitors seeking authentic flavours of Sarawak.
By celebrating the festive season alongside hawkers, the Kuching South City Council reinforced its support for small businesses and community livelihoods.
The event reflected how shared celebrations strengthen connections between local authorities and the people they serve, while keeping Kuching’s food traditions alive.
