KUCHING – The first monthly Free Health Screening and Counselling Programme was successfully held this morning at the Kuching Natural Farmers’ Market, marking the start of a regular initiative to promote preventive healthcare in the community.
Jointly organised by Kuching South City Council (MBKS), Diabetes Malaysia (Sarawak Branch), the Lions Club of Kuching North, Lions Club of Kuching Lavender, and the Kuching Natural Farmers’ Market, the programme offered free diabetes and blood pressure checks alongside professional health counselling.
The initiative aims to encourage early detection of health issues and foster healthier lifestyles among residents.
Dato Wee Hong Seng, Mayor of Kuching South, welcomed the programme as part of MBKS’s Age-Friendly City Initiative.
He emphasised that preventive healthcare is essential in ensuring residents, particularly senior citizens, can age actively and healthily.
“This morning’s programme is a meaningful step towards bringing essential health services closer to the community.
It reflects our commitment to ensuring that our residents, especially senior citizens, have access to preventive healthcare and can age actively and healthily,” Dato Wee said.
He also commended the organisers for their dedication and community spirit. “I would like to commend Diabetes Malaysia and the Lions Clubs for their continued efforts in promoting public health. Their commitment plays a vital role in encouraging early detection and empowering the community to take charge of their health,” he added.
The programme, held from 7.00 am to 10.00 am, received encouraging support from the public. A total of 68 senior citizens underwent health screenings and benefited from on-site checks and professional advice on managing their health.
Organisers confirmed that the initiative will continue on the first Saturday of every month, providing consistent access to free health services for the community.
By offering regular screenings, the programme aims to reduce health risks, improve awareness, and strengthen Kuching’s reputation as an age-friendly city.
Community members expressed appreciation for the initiative, noting that it provides accessible healthcare support in a convenient setting.
The collaboration between MBKS, health organisations, and civic groups reflects a shared commitment to building a healthier and more inclusive Kuching South.
