MIRI – The Sarawak Manpower Department, through its Miri office, carried out a special enforcement exercise known as “Shopping Ops” at Bintang Megamall on 23 April 2026.
The operation involved six enforcement officers and was conducted between 10.00 am and 4.00 pm. The initiative focused on ensuring compliance with labour laws among employers in the retail and service sectors.
Officers also took the opportunity to provide information on the amendments to the Labour Ordinance (Sarawak Chapter 76), which came into effect in May 2025.
During the operation, inspections were conducted on 20 employers. As a result, two First Information Reports (FIRs) were opened, alongside two investigation papers.
The offences detected were related to Sections 114(1) and 114(8) of the Labour Ordinance, highlighting breaches in employment practices.
Officials confirmed that the operation proceeded smoothly without incident. The department stressed that adherence to labour laws is a legal obligation, and any failure to comply will result in enforcement action under the provisions of the law.
The Shopping Ops initiative reflects Sarawak’s broader commitment to strengthening workforce governance and ensuring fair treatment of employees.
By targeting retail and service employers, the department aims to raise awareness of legal responsibilities while promoting transparency in employment practices.
Labour law amendments introduced in 2025 were designed to modernise regulations and improve protections for workers.
These include updated provisions on wages, working hours, and employment conditions, aligning Sarawak’s labour framework with national standards.
The department reiterated its appreciation for employers who comply with regulations and encouraged businesses to familiarise themselves with the updated ordinance.
Continuous enforcement operations will be conducted to ensure that all employers meet their obligations and that workers’ rights are safeguarded.
Community observers noted that visible enforcement in public spaces such as shopping centres helps reinforce accountability and builds confidence among employees.
The department’s proactive approach demonstrates its commitment to balancing economic growth with social responsibility.
