KUCHING – The Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB) convened a meeting with representatives from the Environmental Defence Fund (EDF) and the Sarawak Development Institute (SDI) on 23 April 2026 at Menara Pelita.
The session served as a platform to explore potential collaboration in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and advancing decarbonisation efforts across Sarawak.
The discussion centred on the implementation of the Environment (Reduction of Greenhouse Gas Emissions) Ordinance, 2023, which provides the legal framework for emission reduction initiatives in the state.
Participants highlighted the importance of strengthening regulatory readiness and ensuring that technical knowledge on methane measurement and verification is enhanced.
EDF shared its international experience in tackling methane emissions, including best practices in monitoring, measurement approaches, and capacity-building programmes.
The organisation emphasised the need for adopting proven strategies to reduce emissions effectively, while also tailoring them to Sarawak’s specific industrial and environmental context.
SDI outlined its potential role in supporting policy and governance reviews, conducting research, and providing benchmarking tools.
The institute also stressed the importance of stakeholder engagement, noting that collaboration between government agencies, industry players and civil society will be essential in achieving long-term sustainability goals.
The meeting further explored suitable technologies for monitoring emissions from key sectors, with participants agreeing that innovation and technical expertise will be critical in ensuring accurate reporting and compliance.
By adopting advanced monitoring systems, Sarawak aims to strengthen transparency and accountability in its environmental governance.
Officials underscored that reducing greenhouse gas emissions is not only a regulatory requirement but also a vital step towards safeguarding the environment and supporting Sarawak’s broader sustainability agenda.
The collaboration between NREB, EDF and SDI is expected to contribute to the state’s efforts in aligning with global climate commitments while driving local economic resilience.
The session concluded with a shared commitment to continue discussions and identify practical pathways for cooperation.
Stakeholders expressed optimism that joint initiatives will help accelerate Sarawak’s transition towards a low-carbon future, reinforcing its position as a leader in sustainable development within the region.
