DUBLIN – Sarawak has announced plans to establish a large-scale AI data campus in Kuching, aimed at positioning the state as a hub for artificial intelligence and data centre investment.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Haji Johari Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg revealed that a 405-hectare site near Kuching has been earmarked for the project.
The facility, to be known as the Kuching AI Data Campus, will be developed with dedicated power and water supply to support data centres and AI interconnection nodes, forming the foundation for a future AI grid.
The development will be carried out through a Public Private Partnership (PPP) model, beginning with the first phase on a 120-hectare site.
The Premier, currently on a working trip to the UK and Ireland, made the announcement while visiting the K2 Data Campus in Dublin, which will serve as the model for the Kuching project.
He explained that the initiative is aligned with broader development plans for Tanjung Embang near Kuching, which include a new airport, sea port, and low-carbon industries.
“The Kuching campus will be modelled on the K2 Data Campus here,” he said, noting that the project is expected to complement Sarawak’s wider infrastructure and industrial expansion.
During the visit, the Premier and his delegation were briefed by K2 management on the campus’s operations before touring the facility.
The delegation included State Secretary Datuk Amar Haji Mohamad Abu Bakar bin Marzuki, Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department Datuk Hajjah Sharifah Hasidah binti Syed Aman Ghazali, State Financial Secretary Dato Sri Dr Wan Lizozman Haji Wan Omar, Director of the State Economic Planning Unit (EPU) Datu Ir. Ts. Awang Mohd Fadillah Awang Redzuan, and Director of the Sarawak Climate Change and Energy Diplomacy Unit (SACED) Ir. Dr Angelia Liew San Chuin.
The Kuching AI Data Campus is expected to play a pivotal role in Sarawak’s digital transformation, creating opportunities for investment, innovation, and skilled employment.
By integrating advanced infrastructure with sustainable development goals, the project aims to strengthen Sarawak’s position in the global digital economy.
