KUCHING – Sarawak has taken another step towards strengthening its human capital development through a new collaboration between the Institute of Management Sarawak (MASA) and the University of Melbourne.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), signed on 12 May 2026, was witnessed by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg.
The partnership is expected to enhance education opportunities, expand access to global expertise, and prepare Sarawakians for the demands of the future economy.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Premier emphasised that the state’s success depends not only on infrastructure and economic investments but equally on the quality of its workforce.
“For Sarawak, education is not merely about obtaining academic qualifications; it is about empowering our people with knowledge, skills, confidence, and the ability to shape their own future,” he said.
He added that regions which prioritise education and talent development will be better positioned to remain competitive in today’s rapidly evolving global landscape.
The Premier also highlighted the importance of equipping Sarawakians with the right competencies, leadership qualities and global perspectives as the state moves towards its aspiration of becoming a high-income and developed region by 2030.
“As we move towards becoming a high-income and developed region by 2030, we must ensure that our workforce is equipped with the right competencies, leadership qualities, and global perspectives,” he said.
The collaboration with the University of Melbourne is expected to support Sarawak’s economic transformation agenda, particularly in renewable energy, the digital economy, artificial intelligence and connected technologies.
The Premier noted that international institutions such as the University of Melbourne are recognised globally for their innovation and academic excellence, and Sarawak stands to benefit from access to world-class students and professionals.
He further explained that the Master of Business Administration (MBA) programme under the collaboration would provide reliable training for managing complex economies, driving innovation and strengthening organisational leadership.
The initiative also aims to support students across different levels, including digital learners, technical and vocational training (TVET) participants, and higher education students.
Professor Peter Gahan, Deputy Dean (Interim) of the Faculty of Business and Economics at the University of Melbourne, also delivered remarks at the ceremony, reinforcing the institution’s commitment to fostering international cooperation and talent development.
The event was attended by senior Sarawak leaders including Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Prof Dr Sim Kui Hian, Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn, and Sarawak State Secretary Dato Sri Dr Muhammad Abdullah Zaidel.
The MoU is seen as a milestone in Sarawak’s broader strategy to build a globally competitive workforce. By investing in education and international collaboration, the state aims to ensure its people are well-prepared to meet the challenges of the future economy.
