MIRI – The Sarawak Road Transport Department (JPJ) carried out a major enforcement exercise in Miri on Thursday, focusing on overloaded and unsafe commercial vehicles along two key routes.
The operation, known as the Commercial Vehicle Breakout and Overload Ops, was conducted by the Miri JPJ Operations Unit with support from the SP Skaloh Operations Unit.
Officers were stationed along the Pan Borneo Highway and the Miri-Bintulu Coastal Road, both of which are heavily used by lorries transporting goods across northern Sarawak.
JPJ Sarawak Director, YBrs Tuan Norizan bin Jili, was present to oversee the enforcement activities. His attendance underscored the department’s commitment to ensuring that road safety standards are upheld.
He was joined by Puan Fifi Suhesty binti Asmuni, Head of the Enforcement Division, and Tuan Saifullah bin Hj Ali, Head of the Operations Section.
During the operation, a total of 53 lorries were inspected. Officers found multiple violations ranging from overloading and carrying hazardous cargo to poor tyre maintenance and other technical faults.
Each offence was dealt with according to existing road transport laws, with enforcement action taken against the operators involved.
Overloaded lorries are a recurring concern in Sarawak, particularly on long-haul routes where heavy vehicles contribute to road damage and pose risks to other motorists.
JPJ has repeatedly emphasised that strict enforcement is necessary to reduce accidents and improve compliance among commercial drivers.
The department highlighted that such operations are not one-off exercises but part of a continuous strategy to monitor and regulate commercial transport.
JPJ Sarawak has pledged to intensify checks, especially on vehicles carrying goods, to safeguard road users and maintain public confidence in transport safety.
Authorities also reminded operators that proper vehicle upkeep, including tyre maintenance and load management, is essential to prevent breakdowns and accidents.
The department noted that compliance with road laws is not only a legal requirement but also a responsibility towards community safety.
This latest enforcement effort reflects JPJ Sarawak’s broader mission to strengthen road safety culture across the state.
With the Pan Borneo Highway serving as a vital economic artery, ensuring that commercial vehicles adhere to regulations remains a top priority.
