KUALA LUMPUR – Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg convened a meeting with Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) Members of Parliament and Senators in Kuala Lumpur on 22 June 2026, coinciding with the start of the Second Meeting of the Fifth Term of the 15th Parliament.
The gathering was aimed at aligning GPS representatives on issues central to Sarawak’s development, including the progress of strategic projects and the state’s position in federal matters.
It also provided a platform to strengthen coordination among lawmakers, ensuring Sarawak’s voice remains prominent in national discussions.
During the session, the Premier highlighted the importance of unity and collaboration among GPS parliamentarians and senators.
He underscored that consistent commitment is vital to advancing Sarawak’s development agenda, which he described as essential for the well-being of the people.
“Cooperation and unity must be maintained to ensure Sarawak’s development agenda is implemented effectively,” he said.
The meeting was attended by senior GPS leaders, including Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Fadillah Yusof and Works Minister Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi, reflecting the coalition’s collective approach to federal engagement.
Their presence reinforced the significance of the discussions, particularly as Sarawak continues to push for greater recognition of its rights and interests within Malaysia’s federal framework.
The parliamentary sitting, which began on 22 June, will run until 16 July, covering 16 days of deliberations. Following this, the Dewan Negara is scheduled to convene from 20 July to 4 August for 10 days. The previous Dewan Rakyat session concluded on 3 March after 20 days of proceedings.
Observers note that such meetings are crucial for GPS, as they allow the coalition to present a unified stance on matters ranging from infrastructure development to resource management.
The Premier’s emphasis on strategic coordination reflects Sarawak’s broader ambition to secure equitable treatment and sustained growth within the federation.
This latest initiative demonstrates GPS’s ongoing efforts to balance state priorities with national policies, ensuring Sarawak’s development agenda remains firmly on track.
The meeting also signals the coalition’s readiness to engage constructively in parliamentary debates while safeguarding Sarawak’s long-term interests.
