SRI AMAN – Fire and Rescue Department personnel successfully eliminated a dangerous wasp nest located near Sekolah Kebangsaan Nanga Aup, Engkilili, on Monday afternoon, ensuring the safety of pupils and staff.
The incident was reported at 4.29 pm on 22 June 2026, when a member of the public alerted the authorities about the presence of the nest along the main road leading to the school.
The site was approximately 43 kilometres from the nearest fire station. A team led by PB Albert Shee Ji Long was immediately dispatched to the location.
The operation utilised a Toyota Hilux vehicle for transport, and the commander was equipped with full personal protective gear to manage the situation safely.
Upon arrival, the team confirmed the presence of the wasp nest, which posed a potential risk to schoolchildren and the surrounding community.
Using a fire torch unit, the nest was destroyed in a controlled manner. The operation was completed without further complications, and the team ensured no additional hazards remained before returning to base.
No other agencies were involved in the operation, and no senior officers were present at the site. The report was initially lodged by Andrew Roypi, who personally visited the fire station to inform the authorities.
The commander noted that the only challenge faced during the operation was the absence of GIRN coverage, which limited communication capabilities. Despite this, the task was carried out efficiently and without incident.
The Fire and Rescue Department continues to emphasise the importance of community vigilance in reporting hazardous situations.
Quick action by the public and effective response from firefighters helped prevent potential harm in this case.
This incident highlights the department’s ongoing commitment to public safety, particularly in rural areas where schools and communities may be more vulnerable to environmental hazards.
The swift removal of the nest ensured that normal activities at SK Nanga Aup could proceed without disruption.
