JOHOR BAHRU – Kuching North City Hall (DBKU) has undertaken a three-day benchmarking visit to Johor Bahru, aimed at strengthening its Smart City and sustainable development agenda.
The visit, held from 23 to 25 June 2026, was led by the Deputy Director of Community Services, Mr Rudzaimeir Malek, accompanied by senior DBKU officers.
The delegation visited several key institutions, including the Iskandar Regional Development Authority (IRDA) and Johor Bahru City Council (MBJB).
These engagements provided DBKU with insights into best practices and approaches adopted by local authorities in implementing smart city initiatives and sustainable urban development strategies.
The benchmarking exercise was designed to support DBKU’s aspiration of transforming Kuching into a resilient, sustainable and people-centred smart city.
By learning from Johor Bahru’s experiences, DBKU aims to strengthen its own frameworks for urban planning, digital transformation and community-focused development.
In addition to institutional visits, the delegation toured BluBio Sdn Bhd to study the production of organic fertiliser.
The company’s processes were highlighted as having potential applications in landscape management and environmental sustainability, aligning with DBKU’s broader goals of integrating green practices into city management.
The visit was joined by several senior figures, including Ts Shahrizan bin Mohammad Sahmoni, Director of SIRIM Sarawak; Puan Norhayati Bidin, Head of DBKU Public Relations Division; Encik Muhammad Muhaimin bin Samsuddin, Head of DBKU Information Technology Division; and Encik Abang Mohd Nashriq bin Abang Heilman, DBKU Engineer.
Their participation underscored the importance of cross-sector collaboration in advancing DBKU’s smart city agenda.
Officials noted that the benchmarking visit was not only about observing practices but also about building strategic cooperation networks. By fostering partnerships and exchanging knowledge, DBKU hopes to strengthen its capacity to deliver smarter, sustainable and competitive urban development initiatives.
The initiative reflects DBKU’s commitment to continuous improvement and innovation in city management.
With a focus on sustainability, resilience and citizen well-being, the benchmarking visit is expected to provide valuable input for shaping Kuching’s future as a modern smart city.
