Miri Council Conducts Drain Maintenance for Flood Prevention

MIRI – The Miri City Council has carried out perimeter drain maintenance works on 20 June 2026 around the shophouse area of Jalan Piasau Utara and Jalan Palma Utama. The activity formed part of the Council’s scheduled upkeep programme for the second session of June, aimed at ensuring the city’s drainage system remains efficient and reliable.

The works were undertaken to improve water flow and reduce the risk of waterlogging, which can lead to flash floods during heavy rainfall. By keeping drains clear and functional, the Council hopes to provide a cleaner and safer environment for residents, traders and visitors in the area.

Officials explained that periodic maintenance is essential to prevent blockages caused by debris, sediment and waste. Such preventive measures are considered vital in urban centres like Miri, where rapid development and increasing traffic place additional pressure on public infrastructure.

The Council has consistently highlighted its commitment to strengthening service delivery and improving the quality of life for urban communities. Regular drainage maintenance is one of several initiatives being implemented to safeguard public health and safety, alongside road repairs, waste management and facility upgrades.

Local traders have welcomed the move, noting that effective drainage helps maintain a more conducive business environment. Flooding and stagnant water can disrupt operations, damage property and deter customers, making proactive maintenance an important factor in sustaining economic activity.

Urban planners have also stressed the importance of such interventions in building resilience against climate-related challenges. With Sarawak experiencing seasonal heavy rains, ensuring that drainage systems are well maintained is critical to reducing the impact of sudden downpours.

The Council’s broader agenda reflects a long-term vision of creating a sustainable and liveable city. By investing in infrastructure upkeep, authorities aim to balance development with environmental management, ensuring that Miri continues to grow without compromising the well-being of its residents.

Future maintenance sessions are expected to continue across other parts of the city, reinforcing the Council’s pledge to deliver consistent improvements. Residents have been encouraged to support these efforts by keeping public spaces clean and avoiding practices that contribute to drain blockages.
