SEMATAN – Local authorities in Sematan responded swiftly to a public safety concern on 24 June 2026 after a wasp nest was reported near a school field.
The incident was managed by the Sematan District Operations Control Centre (PKOD), which received an emergency call from a complainant seeking assistance to remove the nest.
The report highlighted the presence of a naning wasp colony on a tree close to the school grounds. Given the potential risk to students and staff, the matter was escalated to the Civil Defence Force (APM) in Sematan, who were tasked with neutralising the threat.
The complainant, identified as a representative from the school community, requested immediate intervention to safeguard the area.
APM officers carried out the operation with the objective of ensuring the safety of the public and preventing possible stings or allergic reactions.
Wasp nests, particularly those located near schools or residential areas, are considered hazardous due to the aggressive nature of the insects when disturbed.
The removal process typically involves protective equipment and controlled destruction of the nest to minimise risks.
This case underscores the importance of community vigilance and the role of local agencies in responding to environmental hazards.
Emergency calls of this nature are prioritised to prevent accidents, especially in locations frequented by children.
The Sematan District Operations Control Centre continues to coordinate closely with schools and community organisations to ensure rapid response to similar incidents.
Authorities reminded residents that insect nest destruction cases are not uncommon in rural and semi-urban areas of Sarawak, where vegetation provides suitable habitats for wasps and other stinging insects.
Public awareness campaigns have been conducted in recent years to encourage communities to report nests promptly rather than attempting removal themselves, which can lead to serious injury.
The APM Lundu Sematan team emphasised their commitment to readiness and integrity in handling such emergencies.
Their motto, “Ready, Fast & Integrity,” reflects the operational standards expected during urgent interventions.
Residents are urged to remain cautious and to contact emergency services immediately if they encounter similar threats in their neighbourhoods.
For emergencies, the public may reach the APM Lundu-Sematan Public Relations and Documentation Unit at 082711292.
The unit continues to provide support and coordination for incidents requiring immediate attention, reinforcing the importance of community cooperation in maintaining safety.
