SPAOH – Residents of Kampung Spaoh and road users were alarmed on the evening of 25 June 2026 when a sizeable honey bee hive was discovered near the As-Syifa Mosque intersection.
The hive, described as being as large as a rubbish bin, was spotted on a tree close to a public gathering area, prompting immediate concern for safety.
The hive’s low position heightened fears among locals, particularly as bees can become more aggressive at night if disturbed.
Motorists and pedestrians passing through the intersection expressed unease about the possibility of sudden attacks, especially for vulnerable road users such as motorcyclists.
Following a public complaint, the Civil Defence Force’s Alpha Squad was deployed to manage the situation. The operation commenced at 8.28 pm and concluded successfully at 8.54 pm.
Three members of the squad carried out the destruction using a controlled burning method to ensure the hive was completely eliminated and posed no further risk.
Alpha Squad Chief Sjn (PA) Kamarrul Bin Badarudin explained that the team acted swiftly due to the unusual size of the hive and its proximity to the mosque and residential areas.
He confirmed that all personnel involved were unharmed during the operation. The presence of such a large hive in a populated area highlights the importance of community vigilance.
Authorities have repeatedly advised residents not to attempt removal themselves, as bee stings can cause severe pain and, in some cases, dangerous allergic reactions.
Instead, the public is encouraged to report sightings of insect nests to emergency services for professional handling.
Environmental experts note that bees often build hives in areas with abundant vegetation and food sources, which can sometimes overlap with human activity. While bees play a vital role in pollination and ecological balance, their nests in public spaces can pose significant risks if left unmanaged.
Local authorities continue to remind residents that emergency teams are trained and equipped to deal with such hazards safely. The Civil Defence Force emphasises its operational principle of “Ready, Fast, With Integrity,” ensuring that urgent cases are handled promptly and effectively.
