KAPIT – Sarawak is set to broaden its smart school initiative by integrating digital platforms and artificial intelligence (AI) into classrooms, a move aimed at raising the quality of education across the state.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari Bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg announced the expansion during his visit to Sekolah Kebangsaan Kampung Baru Kapit and the Kapit Old Airport site.
The Premier explained that education transformation is no longer confined to constructing school buildings but now requires technology-driven solutions to widen access to learning.
“We want to create a smart classroom that uses a digital platform. Through this platform, students can access various subjects including artificial intelligence technology,” he said.
The government’s plan includes the introduction of digital learning systems that will allow students to engage with a wide range of subjects, including AI, regardless of their location.
This approach is expected to bridge the gap between urban and rural schools, ensuring that children in remote areas receive the same quality of education as those in cities.
Abang Johari also highlighted the state’s ongoing efforts to address dilapidated schools. Several institutions have already been upgraded, with more scheduled for redevelopment in stages.
“Efforts to upgrade schools will continue because we want to provide more conducive educational facilities for Sarawakian children,” he said.
The Premier emphasised that the use of digital platforms will not only modernise classrooms but also create opportunities for students to learn in innovative ways.
By incorporating AI responsibly, in line with established guidelines, Sarawak aims to prepare its younger generation for future industries shaped by technology.
The initiative forms part of Sarawak’s broader education reform strategy, which seeks to align teaching methods with global trends while maintaining inclusivity.
The government believes that smart schools will encourage creativity, critical thinking, and digital literacy among students, equipping them with skills essential for the modern workforce.
Observers note that the expansion of smart schools complements Sarawak’s wider development agenda, which includes investment in human capital and technological innovation.
By prioritising education alongside infrastructure and economic growth, the state is positioning itself to meet future challenges with a well-prepared population.
The Premier’s announcement underscores Sarawak’s commitment to ensuring that education remains a cornerstone of its development strategy.
With digital platforms and AI at the forefront, the smart school concept is expected to redefine learning experiences and strengthen opportunities for students across the state.
