Sarawak Sets 2030 Goal for 70% Digital Literacy

MIRI – Sarawak has set an ambitious target to ensure that at least 70 percent of its population achieves digital literacy by 2030, a move aimed at preparing citizens for the demands of a rapidly evolving digital economy.

Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg, emphasised that the success of smart city initiatives and the wider digital economy depends on equipping people with the necessary knowledge and skills to fully harness technology.

Speaking at the launch of the Miri Smart City Command Centre at the Imperial Hotel, he highlighted the importance of building a society that is not only familiar with technology but also capable of mastering it.

“I feel that in Sarawak, at least 70 percent of our population must become a smart population,” he said. “We need to equip the people with the knowledge and skills so that they can master technology, not just use it.”

To support this vision, the state government projects that between 39,000 and 48,750 highly skilled digital jobs will be created by 2030.

These opportunities are expected to arise across technology-driven industries, ensuring Sarawak develops a competitive workforce.

The Premier noted that the government’s commitment to free higher education, skills training, and human capital development will play a central role in achieving this target.

Since 2018, more than 540,000 individuals have participated in upskilling and reskilling programmes organised by the state.

These initiatives have reached diverse groups, including rural communities and older citizens, enabling them to adapt to digital tools in everyday life.

Programmes such as the Sarawak Basic Needs Contribution (SKAS) have introduced cashless payment systems, helping residents become more comfortable with digital transactions.

The Premier also stressed that digital literacy efforts will continue to expand, with greater exposure to artificial intelligence (AI) technologies.

He explained that preparing Sarawakians to engage with AI is essential for navigating the global economic landscape, which is increasingly shaped by automation and advanced digital systems.

Observers note that Sarawak’s digital agenda aligns with broader national and international trends, where governments are prioritising digital skills to remain competitive.

The focus on smart cities, clean energy, and sustainable development further positions Sarawak as a forward-looking state that aims to balance technological progress with environmental responsibility.

The establishment of the Miri Smart City Command Centre reflects this commitment, serving as a hub for monitoring urban systems, enhancing public safety, and improving service delivery.

The centre is expected to play a pivotal role in ensuring that Miri evolves into a modern, low-carbon smart city, complementing the state’s wider digital transformation strategy.

As Sarawak moves towards 2030, the government’s challenge will be to maintain momentum in training, ensure inclusivity across urban and rural areas, and foster innovation among its people.

The Premier’s call for a digitally literate society underscores the belief that technology must be mastered collectively to secure long-term prosperity.
