Premier Urges Developing App to Simplify Miri Smart City Reports

MIRI – Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg has called for the creation of a dedicated application to condense weekly reports generated by the Miri Smart City Command Centre (MSCCC).

The proposal was made during the centre’s official opening ceremony at the Imperial Hotel, highlighting the state’s ambition to strengthen digital governance and improve urban management.

The Premier explained that the MSCCC, which operates continuously, collects vast amounts of data daily. He suggested that this information should be summarised into a format that is straightforward and accessible to the public.

“I propose that another application be created that can summarise all activities recorded over a week. MSCCC operates 24 hours a day, so all information obtained can be summarised and shared with the community as useful information,” he said.

The Premier emphasised that the initiative would allow residents to better understand city developments and enable local authorities to monitor activity trends.

By presenting information in a simplified manner, the application could help identify areas requiring improvement in service delivery.

He noted that digital technology must be translated into efficient communication tools that benefit the community directly.

The MSCCC is equipped with artificial intelligence, real-time data analysis, and facial recognition systems. These technologies are designed to support city management, enhance public safety, and provide data-driven insights for government decision-making.

The Premier stressed that the data collected should be utilised effectively to strengthen administration and improve the well-being of citizens.

The establishment of the MSCCC is part of Sarawak’s wider push towards digital transformation under the Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030.

The centre is expected to serve as a hub for monitoring and managing smart city operations in Miri, integrating technology into public safety, traffic management, and service delivery.

During his visit, the premier reviewed the centre’s readiness and observed demonstrations of its systems, including the bus signal priority programme and AI surveillance grid.

The facility covers 77 kilometres of real-time monitoring, aimed at improving urban resilience and efficiency.

Miri, often referred to as Sarawak’s “oil town”, has been selected as a pioneer city for smart initiatives since 2020.

The MSCCC represents the second phase of these efforts, following the successful implementation of ten smart applications under Phase 1.

The city, with a population of around 350,000, is seven times the size of Singapore, making efficient urban management critical.

The Premier’s presence at the launch underscored the government’s commitment to ensuring that the MSCCC is fully prepared to meet modern urban challenges.

Senior state leaders, including Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian and several ministers, attended the event, reflecting the importance of the initiative in Sarawak’s long-term vision for inclusive growth and innovation.

The proposed application to summarise weekly reports is expected to complement the MSCCC’s operations by making information more accessible to the public.

It aligns with the state’s broader ambition to create smart, sustainable cities that harness technology for community benefit.

As Sarawak continues to invest in digital infrastructure, the MSCCC stands as a cornerstone of its smart city ecosystem, promising improved transparency, accountability, and service delivery for Miri’s residents.
