LUNDU – Firefighters from the Lundu Fire and Rescue Station (BBP Lundu) were called to assist in a locked car incident at the Old Ferry Terminal in Lundu on Saturday afternoon, ensuring the situation was resolved safely and efficiently.
The emergency call was received at 1.11pm, with the team travelling approximately five kilometres to reach the location. Upon arrival, they discovered a Proton Saga MC2 with its doors locked, leaving the vehicle inaccessible.
Using specialised equipment designed for such operations, the firefighters managed to unlock the car door without causing damage. Once the vehicle was safely opened and the surrounding area confirmed secure, the team concluded the operation and returned to their station.
Incidents involving locked vehicles are not uncommon, particularly in busy areas where cars are frequently parked for extended periods. Fire and Rescue Department officers are trained to handle such situations with precision, ensuring that vehicles are accessed quickly while minimising risks to property or individuals.
The department has often reminded the public of the importance of keeping spare keys accessible and ensuring vehicles are regularly checked to avoid unnecessary emergencies. Locked car incidents can occur due to misplaced keys, malfunctioning locks, or electronic system failures. In some cases, such situations can pose risks if children or pets are trapped inside, though no such danger was reported in this instance.
Community members in Lundu expressed appreciation for the firefighters’ prompt response, noting that their readiness to assist in non-fire emergencies demonstrates the department’s wider role in safeguarding public welfare. The operation highlights the versatility of the Fire and Rescue Department, which often responds to a range of incidents beyond fires, including road accidents, hazardous material spills, and rescue operations.
Authorities continue to encourage residents to report emergencies swiftly, as timely intervention can prevent complications. The Lundu team’s professionalism in handling this case reflects the department’s commitment to maintaining safety standards across Sarawak.
This incident serves as a reminder of the diverse responsibilities carried out by firefighters, who are frequently called upon to resolve unexpected challenges in the community. Their ability to adapt to different scenarios underscores the importance of ongoing training and preparedness.
As Sarawak develops and traffic volumes increase, the Fire and Rescue Department remains focused on strengthening its operational readiness. Public cooperation and awareness remain vital in ensuring that emergency services can respond effectively when needed.
