Forest Fire Contained in Kpg Bengang by BBP Lundu

LUNDU – Firefighters from the Lundu Fire and Rescue Station (BBP Lundu) were deployed to Kampung Bengang on Saturday evening following reports of a forest fire.

The emergency call was received at 8.22pm, with the team travelling approximately six kilometres to reach the affected area. Upon arrival, officers observed flames spreading deep within the forest.

The fire was described as intense, but after assessing the situation, the team determined that no direct firefighting operation could be carried out.

The decision was based on several factors. The blaze was located far inside the forest, away from residential areas or settlements, meaning there was no immediate threat to human life or property.

Additionally, the site lacked accessible water sources, and there was no GIRN (Government Integrated Radio Network) coverage, which limited communication support for extended operations.

After confirming that the surrounding area was safe and that the fire posed no danger to nearby communities, the firefighters returned to their station.

The incident highlights the challenges faced by emergency responders when dealing with forest fires in remote locations.

Forest fires in Sarawak are often linked to dry weather conditions, land clearing activities, or natural causes such as lightning strikes.

While some fires can be contained quickly, others in inaccessible terrain may be left to burn out naturally if they do not threaten populated areas.

Authorities have repeatedly emphasised the importance of community awareness in preventing forest fires.

Residents are urged to avoid open burning, particularly during dry spells, and to report any signs of fire promptly.

Early detection remains crucial in reducing the risk of fires spreading to areas where lives and property could be endangered.

Environmental experts note that forest fires, even when occurring far from settlements, can have long-term ecological impacts.

They contribute to air pollution, damage biodiversity, and release significant amounts of carbon into the atmosphere.

Preventive measures, including stricter monitoring of land use and community education, are seen as vital steps in reducing such incidents.

The Lundu operation demonstrates the Fire and Rescue Department’s commitment to safeguarding communities while balancing operational feasibility.

Although no direct firefighting was undertaken in this case, the department’s rapid response ensured that the situation was properly assessed and monitored.

Sarawak continues to strengthen its emergency preparedness, with agencies working together to improve coordination and response times.

The incident at Kampung Bengang serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of forest fires and the importance of vigilance in protecting both people and the environment.
