APM Bintulu Safely Captures Cobra in Residential Area

The emergency call prompted immediate mobilisation of APM Bintulu personnel to the location. Upon arrival, the team discovered a black cobra, approximately one metre in length, hiding in the toilet hole at the back of the complainant’s house.

Using the pincer technique, the team managed to capture the snake safely without causing harm to residents or damage to property. The operation was completed smoothly, and the area was declared secure following the removal of the reptile.

Snake-catching cases are not uncommon in Sarawak, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas where vegetation and water sources provide suitable habitats. Cobras, known for their venomous bite, pose serious risks to human safety, making swift intervention essential.

APM Bintulu has reminded the public to avoid handling snakes themselves, as improper attempts can lead to dangerous encounters. Instead, residents are encouraged to contact emergency services for assistance. The public can reach APM Bintulu through the emergency line at 999 or the district hotline at 086-318233, which operates 24 hours a day.

Authorities have consistently emphasised the importance of community vigilance and early reporting of wildlife hazards. By alerting emergency services promptly, risks can be mitigated before accidents occur.

Environmental experts note that while snakes play a vital role in controlling rodent populations, their presence in residential areas presents unavoidable dangers. Removal operations are therefore necessary when snakes threaten human safety.

Residents expressed relief at the swift intervention, acknowledging that the cobra’s presence could have endangered both the household and visitors. The incident underscores the importance of cooperation between communities and emergency services in maintaining safety.

The Malaysian Civil Defence Force continues to strengthen its readiness through training and awareness campaigns, ensuring personnel are prepared to respond to a wide range of emergencies. This latest operation reflects their commitment to protecting communities across Sarawak from unexpected hazards.
