KUCHING – The vibrant spirit of Sarawak was on full display recently at the Batu Kawa Riverbank Park, as the community gathered to mark the approaching Hari Merdeka Sarawak celebrations.

UDC Event 2026

On 17 July 2026, the scenic waterfront venue served as a focal point for public recreation and civic pride. The site visit was led by Sarawak Deputy Premier Dr Sim Kui Hian, who also serves as the state assemblyman for the N14 Batu Kawah constituency.

His presence underscored the state government’s ongoing commitment to enhancing public infrastructure and fostering community well-being across the region.

The park itself stands as a remarkable testament to urban revitalisation. Spanning approximately 15.6 acres, or roughly 6.3 hectares, the site was formerly an ‘abandoned’ floodplain.

Through meticulous planning and dedicated investment, this once-neglected stretch of riverbank has been transformed into a thriving, multi-award-winning public space.

The project’s excellence in design and environmental integration has been formally recognised, securing both the Nature Based Solutions Award and the prestigious National Award for professional landscape architectural design for a public park.

A defining feature of the revitalised park is its comprehensive inclusivity. The facilities have been deliberately designed to cater to a wide demographic spectrum, ensuring that children, teenagers, adults, and senior citizens all have dedicated spaces to enjoy.

Visitors can frequently be seen engaging in a diverse array of activities, from energetic skateboarding sessions and community street dancing to competitive basketball matches and leisurely evening strolls. This variety ensures that the park remains a dynamic hub of activity throughout the day.

Beyond mere recreation, the riverbank park plays a pivotal role in promoting social cohesion. By providing a neutral, welcoming environment, the space naturally brings together individuals from all racial and cultural backgrounds.

This daily interaction fosters mutual understanding and strengthens the social fabric, directly contributing to the vision of a healthier, more harmonious, and united Sarawak.

Such inclusive public spaces are widely regarded by urban planners as essential catalysts for peaceful nation-building at the grassroots level.

The success of the current facilities is part of a broader, multi-phase development strategy for the Batu Kawa riverfront.

The park has been rolled out in distinct stages, with each phase introducing new amenities such as wetland areas, sky bridges, and specialised sports courts.

Looking ahead, the master plan includes the construction of a glass bridge that will seamlessly connect the existing park to the Kampung Rantau Panjang riverbank protection works.

This ambitious addition is projected to create an uninterrupted, scenic three-kilometre walkway, further enhancing pedestrian mobility and tourism appeal.

From an environmental perspective, the park exemplifies the principles of sustainable urban development. By adopting nature-based solutions, the redesign successfully mitigates historical flooding risks while simultaneously creating a lush, green sanctuary within the urban landscape.

The integration of native flora and sustainable drainage systems demonstrates how ecological preservation and public utility can coexist harmoniously.

This approach not only protects the local riverine ecosystem but also provides residents with a high-quality natural retreat.

Ultimately, the transformation of the Batu Kawa Riverbank Park reflects a forward-thinking approach to municipal governance.

By converting a derelict floodplain into a celebrated, award-winning recreational asset, the state has delivered tangible improvements to the daily lives of its citizens.

As Sarawak continues to develop, projects of this nature will remain fundamental in ensuring that urban growth is balanced with the preservation of community spaces, leaving a lasting, positive legacy for future generations.
