The meeting was designed to fortify the strategic alliance between the two premier cultural institutions, with a shared focus on the documentation, conservation, and empowerment of Sarawak’s rich heritage.

The delegation was led by the Chief Executive Officer of the Sarawak State Library, Tuan Haji Japri Bujang Masli.

During the engagement, he extended his formal congratulations to Puan Anielia Anak Siam on her recent appointment as the new Director of the Sarawak Museum Department

This leadership transition presents a timely opportunity to realign institutional goals and foster a more cohesive approach to cultural stewardship across the state.

At the core of the discussions was the imperative to enhance the management of historical documents and archival materials.

Both institutions recognised that preserving these primary sources is fundamental to maintaining an accurate and accessible historical record.

The dialogue specifically addressed the ongoing implementation of the Sarawak State Library Ordinance 1999, which provides the legislative framework for the collection and protection of the state’s published and unpublished materials.

A major focal point of the meeting was the potential nomination of select manuscript collections for the UNESCO Memory of the World Programme.

The Sarawak State Library has been actively working to raise awareness regarding the state’s precious documentary heritage and its alignment with global preservation standards

Identifying and preparing significant archival holdings for international recognition would not only validate their historical importance but also attract broader academic interest and conservation resources.

To achieve these ambitious goals, the two parties explored avenues for deeper operational collaboration. This includes the co-organisation of public exhibitions, the sharing of specialised technical expertise, and the development of joint educational programmes.

By pooling their respective resources, the library and the museum aim to construct a more resilient and comprehensive heritage preservation ecosystem that benefits researchers and the general public alike.

The depth of the Sarawak State Library’s commitment was reflected in the seniority of the attending delegation.

Accompanying the Chief Executive Officer were several key division heads, including Puan Hayati Haji Sabil, who oversees Records Management, and Encik Ramdzan Haji Saman, Head of the Information Resources Sector.

Also present were Dr. Dayangku Horiah Awang Gani, leading the Archives Management Sector, and Puan Dayang Nur Syima Awang Adrus, who heads the Sarawakiana Division.

Mrs. Rozana Octavia Umpu, Head of the Reference, Access and Learning Division, completed the senior contingent, ensuring that all facets of archival and public engagement were represented in the discussions.

The Sarawak Museum Department reciprocated the visit with a warm reception, reaffirming its dedication to this collaborative partnership.

Officials from both sides acknowledged that the challenges of modern archival preservation require unified strategies, particularly as digital transformation reshapes how historical data is stored and accessed.

Looking ahead, the strategic relationship established during this meeting is expected to yield tangible projects in the near future.

By synchronising their efforts, these institutions can ensure that Sarawak’s cultural treasures are not merely stored away, but are actively documented, celebrated, and passed down to future generations.

This cooperative model serves as a benchmark for how government agencies can work in tandem to protect a region’s unique historical identity.
