KUCHING – The 2026 Malaysian Conservation Agency Games, widely recognised by its acronym SAKOM, concluded its inaugural edition on 17 July at the Jubilee Field.
The two-day sporting event brought together conservation professionals from across the nation, culminating in a formal closing ceremony that celebrated athletic achievement and inter-agency camaraderie.
The event was officially brought to a close by Tuan Abang Arabi bin Abang Aimran, the General Manager of the Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC).
Serving as the guest of honour, he commended the participants for their dedication, noting that the tournament successfully fostered a spirit of unity among those tasked with protecting the country’s natural heritage.
As the host of this maiden edition, the Sarawak Forestry Corporation orchestrated a comprehensive programme designed to test both physical endurance and teamwork.
The initiative was supported by senior management representatives from all participating agencies, who attended the final proceedings to endorse the efforts of their respective conservation teams.
The competition featured contingents from three primary organisations: the Peninsular Malaysia Department of Wildlife and National Parks, the Sabah Wildlife Department, and Sabah Parks.
These agencies, which form the backbone of Malaysia’s biodiversity conservation efforts, used the platform to engage in friendly yet competitive sporting fixtures.
Following two days of intense athletic contests, the Sabah Parks contingent emerged as the overall champions of the tournament.
Their consistent performance and strategic coordination throughout the various events secured them the top honours, drawing praise from organisers and fellow competitors alike for their exemplary display of sportsmanship.
The underlying philosophy of the SAKOM Games extends beyond mere athletic rivalry. Organisers emphasised that the discipline and mutual respect demonstrated on the field mirror the collaborative ethos required in environmental stewardship.
By strengthening interpersonal bonds, the event aims to enhance future cooperative efforts in wildlife protection and habitat preservation across state borders.
The Jubilee Field provided an ideal setting for the culmination of the games, offering ample space for the closing parade and award presentations.
The atmosphere was marked by a strong sense of accomplishment, as delegates reflected on the successful execution of the tournament and the logistical support provided by the local Sarawakian hosts.
Tuan Abang Arabi extended formal gratitude to all participating contingents for their enthusiastic involvement.
He highlighted that the seamless organisation of the event was a testament to the hard work of the SFC planning committee and the dedicated volunteers who ensured the smooth running of the fixtures over the weekend.
Looking ahead, the mantle of hosting the SAKOM Games will transition to Sabah. The next iteration of the tournament is scheduled for 2029, where conservation agencies will once again gather to celebrate their shared commitment to environmental sustainability through the medium of sport.
The success of the 2026 edition sets a high benchmark for future tournaments. It demonstrates the viability of using sports as a unifying tool for government agencies that often operate in challenging and remote field conditions.
Such initiatives are increasingly viewed as vital for maintaining morale and fostering a resilient, collaborative workforce in the conservation sector.
Furthermore, the event underscored Sarawak’s capacity to host large-scale, multi-agency gatherings with efficiency and grace.
The integration of professional networking with recreational activities provided a holistic experience for all attendees, reinforcing the state’s reputation as a capable and welcoming host for national-level institutional events.
As the delegates depart Kuching, the legacy of the inaugural SAKOM Games remains firmly established. The friendships forged and the competitive spirit displayed will undoubtedly carry forward into their professional duties, strengthening the collective resolve to safeguard Malaysia’s rich biodiversity for generations to come.
