Miri Community Embraces Sustainability in Green Heroes Tour

MIRI – On the morning of 18 July 2026, the Pujut Adong City Hall became a focal point for civic engagement as the second series of the Green Heroes’ Community Tour 2026 commenced at 8:00 am.

Officiated by Miri City Council Mayor YB Adam Yii, the event marked a significant step in decentralising environmental stewardship and placing it directly into the hands of local residents.

The initiative operates under the umbrella of the Local Agenda 21 and Sustainable Development Goals village adoption programme.

This framework is designed to translate broad, global sustainability targets into actionable, neighbourhood-level projects.

By targeting specific communities like Kampung Pujut Adong, the municipal authority aims to cultivate a pervasive culture of ecological responsibility that extends far beyond official government mandates.

A diverse array of activities was curated to ensure comprehensive community involvement. The morning’s itinerary featured a Zero Litter Campaign, locally known as a communal cleanup effort, alongside organised tree planting sessions.

Furthermore, attendees had the opportunity to participate in a Buy Back Campaign, which incentivises the proper sorting and recycling of household waste.

Complementing these environmental actions were educational and welfare components. Sustainable Development Goal awareness talks were conducted to demystify global sustainability targets for the average citizen.

Concurrently, free health screenings and exhibitions by various government agencies were made available, reinforcing the intrinsic connection between a pristine environment and robust public health.

Addressing the gathering, Mayor Adam Yii emphasised the fundamental role of personal responsibility in urban ecological preservation.

He stated, “I believe sustainability starts from the daily actions of each individual. Separating waste, reducing the use of single-use plastic, planting trees and keeping the area clean are small steps that can bring big changes to our city.”

This perspective highlights a strategic shift from top-down municipal management to a collaborative, community-driven model.

The practical initiatives introduced during the tour, such as the Buy Back Campaign, provide residents with tangible mechanisms to actualise this philosophy.

By rewarding responsible waste disposal, the programme transforms abstract environmental concepts into everyday habits.

Reinforcing the long-term aspirations of the campaign, the mayor encouraged attendees to internalise these principles beyond the confines of the event.

He urged, “Let us not just be participants in the program, but become Green Heroes in our daily lives. Together, let us build a cleaner, greener, healthier and more sustainable Miri for today’s and future generations.”

The selection of Kampung Pujut Adong as a host location is part of a broader strategy to engage fifteen adopted villages across the city.

Each location is carefully chosen to maximise outreach and ensure that the benefits of sustainable urban planning are distributed equitably.

The integration of health screenings alongside environmental activities also demonstrates a holistic approach to community welfare, recognising that human health is inextricably linked to the quality of the surrounding environment.

Historically, rapid urban expansion in coastal cities has often outpaced the development of sustainable waste management and green infrastructure. Programmes like the Green Heroes’ Community Tour serve as a vital corrective measure.

They empower residents to take ownership of their immediate surroundings, fostering a sense of pride and accountability that official enforcement alone cannot achieve.

The presence of multiple agencies at the exhibition booths further facilitated direct dialogue between policymakers and the public.

This transparency allows citizens to voice their concerns, access resources, and gain a clearer understanding of how municipal services operate.

Such engagement is critical for building trust and ensuring that future urban development projects align with the community’s environmental values.

As the event concluded, the tangible results of the morning’s efforts were evident in the revitalised communal spaces and the heightened awareness among attendees. The success of this second series underscores the viability of grassroots-led sustainability initiatives.

Moving forward, the continuity of such programmes will be essential in ensuring that Miri’s growth remains balanced, resilient, and deeply rooted in the principles of environmental stewardship for generations to come.
