JPJ Sarawak Intensifies Road Safety Operations in Kuching

KUCHING – The Road Transport Department (JPJ) Sarawak has significantly intensified its road safety enforcement efforts, conducting a targeted special operation focused on illicit lighting modifications and motorcycle compliance.

UDC Event 2026

The initiative, executed on Friday, 17 July 2026, involved static enforcement checkpoints strategically positioned at Mile 7 along Jalan Penrissen, heading towards Serian.

This coordinated effort forms part of a broader mandate to strengthen adherence to traffic regulations and curb the proliferation of vehicles that fail to meet mandated safety specifications.

By concentrating on high-traffic corridors, authorities aim to maximise the deterrent effect of these inspections while ensuring the safety of all road users.

During the course of the operation, enforcement officers meticulously inspected a total of 874 vehicles of various classifications.

The comprehensive checks yielded several infractions, highlighting ongoing challenges in vehicle compliance among the motoring public.

Among the detected offences were the installation of High-Intensity Discharge (HID) and Light Emitting Diode (LED) headlights that deviate from approved technical specifications.

Additionally, authorities identified multiple documentation violations during the routine stops. These included motorists operating vehicles without a valid driving licence, individuals relying on expired licences, and other technical breaches pertaining to general vehicle roadworthiness.

Such discrepancies not only violate statutory requirements but also pose significant, preventable risks to public safety on busy arterial routes.

As a direct consequence of these findings, five motorcycles were promptly seized by the enforcement team.

The impoundments were primarily due to offences related to the Motor Vehicle Licence (LKM) and the possession of expired insurance coverage.

All identified violations were processed with immediate enforcement actions, strictly adhering to the provisions of the prevailing road transport legislation.

Overseeing the execution of this special operation was Puan Fifi Suhesty binti Asmuni, the Head of the Enforcement Division for JPJ Sarawak.

Her presence on the ground underscored the department’s high-level commitment to maintaining rigorous standards and ensuring that enforcement protocols are applied consistently, transparently, and fairly across all districts.

The crackdown on unauthorised lighting modifications addresses a growing concern regarding nighttime visibility and driver distraction.

Non-compliant HID and LED installations often produce excessive glare, which can temporarily blind oncoming motorists and pedestrians, thereby escalating the likelihood of severe collisions.

By targeting these specific modifications, JPJ Sarawak is proactively mitigating a well-documented hazard on the state’s road network.

Looking ahead, the department has affirmed its intention to continuously enhance and expand these enforcement operations across the entirety of Sarawak.

The focus will remain steadfast on offences that directly compromise the safety and well-being of the commuting public.

Authorities have issued a clear warning that violations involving unapproved lighting, the absence of valid driving credentials, and the failure to renew LKM or insurance policies are treated with utmost seriousness and will not be compromised.

This unwavering stance aligns with the department’s overarching operational philosophy, encapsulated by the principle of “One Voice, Everywhere”.

This guiding tenet ensures that every enforcement action is executed with uniform consistency, regardless of location, fostering a predictable and fair regulatory environment for all motorists throughout the state.

Furthermore, JPJ Sarawak continues to complement its enforcement drives with robust public education campaigns.

By raising awareness about the specific dangers of illegal vehicle modifications and the legal obligations of vehicle ownership, the department aims to shift public behaviour from mere compliance to genuine understanding.

This dual approach of strict enforcement paired with community outreach is essential for cultivating long-term behavioural change and reducing the overall incidence of traffic-related offences in the region.

Ultimately, the success of such initiatives relies heavily on the proactive cooperation of the motoring public.

Vehicle owners are strongly encouraged to conduct regular self-audits of their automobiles, ensuring that all aftermarket modifications are legally sanctioned and that personal documentation remains current.

By fostering a culture of shared responsibility and mutual respect on the roads, Sarawak can collectively advance towards a safer, more compliant, and harmonious road transport ecosystem for current and future generations.
