Lundu Heart Day Promotes Health for Sarawak Day 2026

LUNDU – The commemoration of Sarawak Day 2026 in the Lundu district took on a distinctive focus this year, with public health and community wellness placed at the forefront of celebrations.

Rather than relying solely on traditional festivities, local organisers integrated a comprehensive health agenda into the holiday programme through the staging of Lundu Heart Day.

This initiative aimed to reinforce the message that a prosperous society is fundamentally built upon the physical well-being of its citizens.

Held at Lundu Town Square on Tuesday, the event successfully attracted approximately 500 participants who engaged in a variety of health and leisure activities.

The programme was a collaborative effort between the Sarawak Heart Foundation and the Tanjong Datu State Assemblyman Service Centre.

The strong turnout demonstrated significant community interest in preventive healthcare and active living, suggesting that residents are increasingly receptive to integrating wellness into their daily routines.

Tanjong Datu Assemblyman Azizul Annuar Adenan officiated the event, noting the particular historical weight of this year’s celebration.

He highlighted that 2026 marks exactly ten years since Sarawak Day was officially gazetted as a public holiday by the late Pehin Sri Adenan Satem.

This decade-long milestone serves as a reminder of the holiday’s original intent: to foster unity and allow people of all races and religions to appreciate their shared history collectively.

During his address, the assemblyman drew a direct link between human capital and state development. He argued that economic metrics and infrastructure projects are insufficient measures of progress if the population itself is not resilient.

“The health of the people is an important asset in developing the state. A community that practices a healthy lifestyle will be a driver for Sarawak’s progress and contribute to the well-being of the community as a whole,” he stated.

This perspective reframes public health not merely as a medical issue, but as a critical economic and social foundation.

The event operated under the theme ‘Healthy Together, Sarawak Progress!’, which guided the selection of activities designed to appeal to a broad demographic.

The morning schedule commenced at 7.00 am with a ‘Walk a Mile’ session, encouraging gentle cardiovascular exercise suitable for various fitness levels.

Participants also took part in group aerobics and healthy exercise routines, creating a vibrant atmosphere at the town square. Many attendees wore red shirts as a visual symbol of support for heart health awareness.

Preventive care was another major component of the day. Free health screenings were made available starting at 8.00 am at Mahligai Gading Hall, providing residents with accessible check-ups that might otherwise be delayed due to cost or convenience.

Concurrently, breast self-examination education sessions were conducted at the same venue. These educational components addressed non-communicable diseases directly, empowering individuals with knowledge about early detection and self-care.

To maintain high engagement, a lucky draw was also organised, with a folding bicycle awarded as the grand prize.

Datuk Amar Jamilah Anu, a board member of the Sarawak Heart Foundation, expressed her hope that initiatives like Lundu Heart Day would become permanent fixtures rather than one-off events.

She emphasised the need for continuous programming to sustain public awareness regarding healthcare and disease prevention.

Her remarks suggest a long-term strategy to embed health consciousness into the cultural fabric of Sarawak Day celebrations across different districts.

The success of the event relied heavily on multi-agency cooperation. Support was provided by various government departments, non-governmental organisations, and the PBB N3 Tanjong Datu Youth Movement, which organised a motorcycle convoy to amplify outreach efforts.

This coalition reflects a growing trend of cross-sector collaboration in addressing public health challenges.

Key officials present included Lundu District Officer Zulkarnain Ismail, District Council Secretary Wan Fauzi Wan Ismail, and Police Chief Supt Sudirman Kram, alongside community leaders Pemanca Jumahdi Sabian, Benjamin Gersit Anak Jais, and Chin Kian Ming.

By intertwining health promotion with civic celebration, Lundu has set a precedent for how regional holidays can serve dual purposes.

The integration of fitness, education, and community bonding ensures that the spirit of Sarawak Day extends beyond ceremonial observance to tangible improvements in quality of life.

As the state moves forward, such holistic approaches may well define the next decade of Sarawak Day commemorations, ensuring that progress is measured as much by the vitality of its people as by the height of its buildings.
