BINTULU – The celebration of Sarawak Day in Bintulu demonstrated the power of grassroots initiative, as local communities took charge of organising vibrant activities to mark the historic occasion.
While the official state-level festivities were centred in Sibu this year, residents in Bintulu proved that the spirit of the holiday transcends geographical boundaries, driven by a genuine desire to celebrate their shared identity and heritage.
Tanjong Batu State Assemblyman Ts Johnny Pang Leong Ming emphasised the critical role of community involvement in ensuring that Sarawak Day remains a meaningful and widely appreciated event.
He noted that when locals take the lead in planning programmes, it fosters a deeper sense of ownership and connection to the celebration.
This bottom-up approach ensures that the festivities are not just top-down directives but reflect the true sentiments and enthusiasm of the people.
A prime example of this community-led enthusiasm was the Sarawak Day 4×4 Family Gathering Vol. 3. The event, which drew significant participation from off-road enthusiasts and their families, served as a focal point for the district’s celebrations.

“Programmes like this are not just casual convoys but become a symbol of the spirit of love for Sarawak and the togetherness of the people in conjunction with Sarawak Day,” he stated during a media session at the Bintulu Civic Hall before seeing off the participants.
The convoy was a collaborative effort organised by three prominent local clubs: the BTC Four-Wheel Racing Club, the CHAMO Four-Wheel Racing Club, and the BBKC Four-Wheel Racing Club.
Their joint organisation highlighted the strength of cooperation among different community groups, pooling resources and expertise to create a successful event. The route taken by the participants showcased some of Bintulu’s most scenic landmarks.
The convoy passed over the Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud Bridge and the Tanjong Batu Bridge, offering drivers and passengers panoramic views of the coastal landscape.
The journey continued along the Coastal Road before culminating at Batu Mandi Beach in Similajau, a popular destination known for its natural beauty.
