KUCHING – The escalating challenges of climate change and global food security have strengthened Sarawak’s resolve to invest in science, technology, and innovation (STI) to prepare the state for future environmental and economic challenges.
On 29 July 2026, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg highlighted the urgency of scientific advancement in response to recent extreme weather events worldwide.
He referred to ongoing heatwaves across Europe and severe flooding in parts of Asia as clear indicators of the looming threats posed by climate change.
“The world today is facing a huge challenge, particularly climate change. As we are officiating our Science Centre this afternoon, European countries are experiencing heatwaves, while parts of India are facing devastating floods,” said Abang Johari during the Sarawak Science Centre opening ceremony in Petra Jaya.
The Premier emphasised that climate change disrupts the delicate balance between development and environmental sustainability, presenting serious risks to food production and human survival over the long term.
He drew attention to the Paris Agreement’s goal to limit global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, warning that surpassing this threshold could severely impact agricultural output and food security.
“If the agricultural sector is affected, there will be a reduction in food supply. Without food, the question is whether mankind can continue to survive,” he added.
Sarawak’s natural assets, including its abundant freshwater resources and its position as home to the world’s oldest tropical rainforest, were highlighted as critical to maintaining ecological balance and supporting sustainable development.
These unique environmental advantages have motivated the state government to prioritise investments in scientific research and the development of skilled human capital.
“Our missing gap is that we need scientists. We need young Sarawakians to be equipped with the latest technology and knowledge to make full use of the resources that we have,” Abang Johari stated, underscoring the importance of empowering the younger generation with expertise to harness the state’s natural wealth responsibly.
This strategic focus aligns with broader national and international efforts to confront climate change by leveraging innovation and science to build resilience in food systems and ecosystems.
The Sarawak Government’s proactive approach positions the state to contribute meaningfully to global sustainability goals while fostering local economic growth through science-driven solutions.
By investing in education, research, and technology, Sarawak aims to equip its population, particularly its youth, with the tools necessary to address environmental challenges and develop sustainable industries.
These efforts are expected to enhance the state’s ability to adapt to climate impacts and secure long-term food security for its people.
The Sarawak Science Centre, inaugurated alongside the Premier’s remarks, is a key component of this vision.
